Finding a suitable piece of land will probably be the biggest single challenge you will face in a selfbuild project. Your first step is to work out where you want to live and what are your accommodation requirements, so you will know the general area of your search and the size of plot you will need. Outline ideas of your future home is all you will need at this stage.

Before you start looking for your "mansion" of the future, bear in mind that building plots are very difficult to find in certain areas of the UK. If you do find a plot in an area where land is scarce, be prepared that it could be quite expensive.
